Bland, stodgy, boring and uninteresting! A fair description of our culinary heritage? I think not! More Tea, Vicar? is a shameless defence of the British eating experience, and an exploration of its magnificent traditions and heritage. Does British food deserve the bad reputation it has on the international culinary circuit? Granted it’s not nouvelle cuisine (a.k.a. small portions, high price), intricate garnishes, or exotic aromatics. British food is traditional, homely, warming and comforting. It is versatile, practical and loyal.

Between rants and raves, comments and discussions, you'll find a selection of our favourite recipes, reviews of new and established restaurant, tea shops and eateries, cookbooks and kitchen gadgets.

Lots to catch up on... I'm writing to you from Bulgaria, having just landed after 2 flights (and two very bad airline meals). So as the sea air sweeps across the balcony of my hotel, here's a look back at my culinary week... My week started with a light dinner with family, quiche and salad – a quiche lorraine inspired by The Hairy Bikers (with a few modifications).

The Guardian food blog, Word of Mouth, ran a challenge to produce a meal for five pounds, following on from a feature in G2. Well I was working on my submission but missed the deadline. So, adding a few more luxuries, I ended up with a delicious baked trout .

The bank holiday sunshine took us for a day trip to Brighton. Lunch at Jamie's Italian was disappointing. Pastas were bland and watery and the main courses were dull, lacking finish. Dinner ended up as fish and chips on the seafront. Disappointingly greasy and overcooked fish which didn't do justice to our seaside location.

Monday morning's bank holiday treat was a breakfast feast of Blackberry and Ricotta Pancakes with Poached Eggs, Crispy Bacon and Maple Syrup.

Roast chicken is a great meal. Simple, delicious and very versatile. The beast I bought from Sainsbury's this week (on special offer) lasted us three meals.

The plan was for a picnic lunch in the glorious sunshine, but the rain quickly put paid to that idea. So a blanket in the front room had to do. A selection of saucisson, cheese and a warm potato and chicken salad . Yup this was the third meal. Thanks Chicken!

PS: Blugaria - Great fish, not so great meat, and plenty of salads.
